Health Science Academy

HEALTH SCIENCE CORE FOUNDATIONS *

This course is to be taken prior to Level 3 or 4 classes. In this course, the student will develop an understanding of patient care, disease prevention, and the signs and symptoms of diseases associated with each body system. Students will also learn basic skills needed to work in a healthcare career through labs and simulations. There is a $20 lab fee for this program and students are required to wear scrubs on designated days.

HEALTH SCIENCE ANATOMY & PHYSIOLOGY FOR HEALTH CAREERS *

This course is part of the secondary Health Core and a prerequisite to the Nurse Assistant 3 course. It is designed to prepare students for the career exploration in the area of health care. This class is lab-based and focuses on human anatomy and physiology, with an emphasis on pathophysiology and transmission of disease Medical terminology is an integral part of this course. The course Anatomy and Physiology, #2000350 or Anatomy & Physiology Honors, #2000360 may be substitutes for the course Health Science Anatomy & Physiology, #8417100.

ELECTROCARDIOGRAPH TECHNICIAN 3 *

This course provides opportunities for career exploration and development of employable medical skills. Students travel during class time to various healthcare facilities to observe and participate in clinicals to develop their nursing skills. With the satisfactory completion of this course and its prerequisites, students may be eligible to take the Florida Board of Nursing Electrocardiograph Technician Certification Exam. The student must carry his/her own school health insurance or personal family health insurance as required by the medical facilities cooperative agreement. Personal transportation may be necessary in this course. The purchase of a set of scrubs is required and the required lab fee is $50. School attendance is imperative as this course requires a minimum number of clinical field hours.

NURSE ASSISTANT 3 *

This course provides opportunities for career exploration and development of employable medical skills. Students travel during class time to various healthcare facilities to observe and participate in clinicals to develop their nursing skills. With the satisfactory completion of this course and its prerequisites, students may be eligible to take the Florida Board of Nursing CNA Certification Exam. The student must carry his/her own school health insurance or personal family health insurance as required by the medical facilities cooperative agreement. Personal transportation may be necessary in this course. The purchase of a set of scrubs is required and the required lab fee is $50. School attendance is imperative as this course requires a minimum number of clinical field hours.

This academy is designed to prepare students for the expanding market of health related fields. Specifically, this academy will prepare students with confidence to easily transition to the prerequisites for the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) Program, Registered Nurse (RN) Program, Health Science or Emergency Services careers offered at South Florida State College or another college of the student’s choice.

Successful passing of the program requirements may yield the possibility of Certified Nursing Assistant (CAN) certification, Patient Care Technician (PCT) certification, and Electrocardiogram Technician (EKG) certification. (Must complete course requirements and then complete and pass the certification tests to earn the certificate designations.)
